The Adami Name
If you are wondering where the name "Adami" came from, you are not the first person! It's actually a very old family name that came from my husbands side of the family. Three generations ago when his family was immigrating from Italy and going through Ellis island, the immigration officials required them to change their last name. It seems that their native Italian name of "Quotrocolo" was a little to difficult to spell or say (I don't even know if I spelled it correctly...). The immigration officials took the first name of my husband's great aunt which was "Adami" and added an "s" to the end. The end result of this was a last name of "Adamis".

Ironically over several decades the actual pronunciation of the name has been butchered by the family itself. Only recently have the males that will carry on the name made an effort to correct this by insisting on using the original pronunciation of the name.

The Adami Collection, as you can see, was just going back to the original roots of the family. When first starting the business, there were lots of ideas that we had, but The Adami Collection just seemed to be an obvious name for the company -- simple and elegant.

The early months...
The initial months of starting The Adami Collection was actually a very said time in our family. When we first moved to Las Vegas, we adopted a little Cavalier King Charles Spaniel/Cocker Spaniel mix from the local animal shelter. It wasn't until we got to the very last kennel of the animal shelter that we found our future companion. She was very calm and quite just laying down and watching us with her big eyes. We both agreed that she was just right for our house and we brought  her home. Since she was a Cocker Spaniel we both agreed to name her "Lady" from Disney's "Lady and the Tramp" movie.

Ironically we found out a couple of days later that the reason why she was so calm and quite was because she had just been spayed and was on some strong pain medication. Once the medication wore off, we quickly learned the joys and frustrations of owing a Cocker Spaniel breed. She was full of energy and would chase just about anything. She was our constant companion that we would take on long walks around the neighborhood and to the local park that was being built. At times she was a stinker that would take every advantage she could to sneak something out of the garbage can or off the table. However her excitement energy was balanced by her loyalty and companionship that she offered.

Even though she did make it a habit of bolting out the garage door on several occasions and making us run after her down the street, the most striking thing about Lady was that in many ways her personality was very human like. She was very intelligent to the point at times we wondered if she wasn't some human reincarnated... haha  She learned many tricks that my father taught to her and she would often perform all of them in an effort to get a treat or snack. What was funny was that she would get so excited about the treat that most of the time she would forget to actually finish the trick. A good example of this was getting her to roll over, she would often lay down and go through the beginning motions of rolling over but would then stand up quickly before finishing and expect her treat.

We expected Lady to be with us for several years but, unfortunately, that just wasn't to be. Back in the spring of 2008 we noticed that Lady was acting a little lethargic. At first we were kind of grateful figuring that she must have mellowed out a little from her puppy years. However, one day after giving her a bath and taking her for a walk we noticed a large growth on her body. We took her to the vet to see if they could figure out what it was. After some blood tests, the results came back inconclusive. We were told by the vet that he could have a specialist come in and operate on Lady but he didn't know if it would be effective or not. In an effort to help pay for the operation we decided to start the "Adami Collection" with the intention to use the money to offset the cost of the surgery.

In order to buy some more time in the hopes that the growth would take care of itself we decided to give her some medication to see if the swelling would go down. We were given 14 days of medication not knowing that those would be the last 14 days with our beautiful Lady. When we went back to the vet for a refill on the medication he did another examination and determined that there was likely to be little to no gain by an operation. Realizing that there wasn't much more we could do we made the difficult decision to put Lady down. We took one last family picture together and said our goodbyes. My husband took her for one last walk around the park that they had watched being built before he took her to the vet. He was given the option to hand the leash over to the vet and have them take Lady away but he felt that it wasn't right that she wasn't with someone from her family when she went. So he took her into the room and held her tight as the vet put her to sleep.

Those first couple of days were very difficult for us as a family because there were so many times that we thought we heard Lady's nails clicking on the tile, or we expected her to nuzzle us awake so she could go out. Unfortunately those were just memories of what we once had and had lost. Eventually we got used to Lady no longer being with us. The little sounds that we expected to be caused by her no longer brought her memory back to us. Now, we only have her pictures and videos to look at to remind us of the beautiful companion we once had.

New Direction:
With Lady passing away, the initial reason for the business also passed away. However we were in need of a second source of income and wanted something that might be able to grow into a full time business down the road. I spent a lot of time and effort coming up with designs and ideas for new products. I quickly expanded the bibs from the original String Tie Bib to the Snap Closure Bibs, Wipe up Bibs, Pacifier Holder Bibs, Burp Cloths, Adult Bibs, Art Smocks and finally her newest line of purses.

One of the main goals of The Adami Collection is to make everything here in the United States. We also try to buy American made materials whenever possible in order to support other hard working Americans and their businesses.

With that said, we hope you have enjoyed reading brief history of how The Adami collection was started and encourage you to take a look at our store.

Thank you,
Rachael Adamis
